DE LA INDIFERENCIA A LA PASION POR EL EJERCITO/FROM INDIFFERENCE TO PASSION FOR THE MILITARY
Hace muy poquitos días, recibía un artículo de Elana Shp., periodista de Israel, con residencia en Londres, donde me expresaba la sorpresa y tal vez cierta preocupación acerca de como su “alocada” hija a la que me voy a referir por motivos de seguridad como “Bárbara”, de 16 años, pasó de la indiferencia por el ejército a enrolarse en él.
El pasado 18 de noviembre de 2023, recibió el escrito de que debería presentarse a las ocho de la mañana, en Bakum, base en donde los nuevos soldados, tienen que pasar unas pruebas para ver su idoneidad para el servicio.
En la carta se le advertía que podía resultar un muy largo día, por lo que se le recomendaba, llevasen consigo comida y bebida, porque las pruebas a las que debería someterse, consistían, en unas pruebas de tipo físico, una entrevista personal y un test psicotécnico. Este test podría resultar un poco largo y pesado.
“Bárbara” nunca había sentido un gran interés por el servicio militar. Debido tal vez, a una experiencia desafortunada, cuando contaba con ocho años de edad. Su hermano al que llamaremos “Yosef” había conseguido su ingreso en la Duvdevan, la unidad de élite anti-terrorista de Israel.
El día de la graduación, fueron invitados a ella, los familiares de los nuevos integrantes de la Unidad, entre ellos su hermano “Yosef”, donde entre otras actividades, como el distinto material militar que deberían manejar, le proyectaron un video, donde se les mostraba las misiones encubiertas incluso vestidos con ropa civil, en zonas urbanas, donde tenían que “neutralizar” a los terroristas que ponían en peligro la seguridad del país, sobre todo en la Franja de Gaza y Cisjordania.
El documental puso nervioso a los padres de la niña, tal vez porque ninguno de los dos había sido llamado a prestar el Servicio Militar, algo que a la vivaracha muchachita no le pasó desapercibido y, también le infundió un ligero miedo.
Después de esto, alguna vez le manifestó a sus progenitores, que no deseaba ingresar como su hermano en las Fuerzas Armadas, a ellos tampoco les entusiasmaba, por carecer de la experiencia de vestir de uniforme, al no haber tenido que realizar su Servicio Militar.
Con el paso de los años, no tenían mucha preocupación por ello, aunque realizase su servicio militar obligatorio, al hablar perfectamente tres idiomas, contar con un buen currículo académico, suponían que la utilizarían para cualquier puesto de comunicación o inteligencia.
¿Cómo se produjo el detonante para el cambio de actitud? Los tristes acontecimientos del 7 de noviembre, el ataque de Hamas a los Kibbuts, con muertes y violaciones, hizo que muchos jóvenes y Bárbara no fue una excepción, tuviesen el deseo de contribuir a la defensa del país y ayudar a liberar a los rehenes (muchos de ellos jóvenes también).
“Bárbara” con dieciséis años, logro alcanzar su primera etapa, dentro de su incipiente carrera militar.

A few days ago, I received an article from Elana Shp. a journalist from Israel, based in London, where she expressed her surprise and perhaps some concern about how her "crazy" daughter, whom I will refer to for security reasons as "Barbara", aged 16, went from indifference to the army to enlisting in it.
Both she and her husband knew that this could happen on any given day, but now they found it perhaps came too soon and at the age of sixteen she received her official certificate of eligibility (Tzav rishon) for entry into the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
In the letter he was warned that it could be a very long day, so he was recommended to take food and drink with him, because the tests he would have to undergo consisted of some physical tests, a personal interview and a psycho-technical test. This test could turn out to be a bit long and heavy.
"Barbara" had never felt a great interest in military service. Perhaps due to an unfortunate experience when she was eight years old. Her brother, whom we will call "Yosef", had been accepted into the Duvdevan, Israel's elite anti-terrorist unit.
On graduation day, the relatives of the new members of the unit, including his brother "Yosef", were invited to the graduation, where among other activities, such as the different military equipment they had to handle, they were shown a video, where they were shown undercover missions even dressed in civilian clothes, in urban areas, where they had to "neutralize" terrorists who endangered the security of the country, especially in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The documentary made the girl's parents nervous, perhaps because neither of them had been called up for military service, something that did not go unnoticed by the lively little girl and also instilled a slight fear in her.
After this, she once told her parents that she did not want to join the Armed Forces like her brother, and they were not enthusiastic about it either, as they lacked the experience of wearing a uniform, not having had to do their military service.
As the years went by, they were not very concerned about it, even if she did her obligatory military service, since she spoke three languages perfectly and had a good academic curriculum, they assumed that she would be used for any communication or intelligence position.
What was the trigger for the change of attitude? The sad events of November 7, the Hamas attack on the Kibbuts, with deaths and rapes, made many young people, and Barbara was no exception, have the desire to contribute to the defense of the country and help free the hostages (many of them young too).
At the age of sixteen, "Barbara" managed to reach her first stage in her incipient military career.
