EL ANCIANO QUE NO QUIERE ENVEJECER//THE OLD MAN WHO DOES NOT WANT TO GROW OLD
Me refiero a joven,
- - Bueno hombre, ahora me va a decir cómo estaba y
JOVI MOORE.
The path seems more stony and steep than ever, with his cane the old man amuses himself by removing some pebbles, which cross his path, he is muttering between his teeth. Although he goes alone, he does not stop longing for past times, when he
was able to go along that same path, less than four minutes a kilometer away. He blames the terrain, but refuses to admit that it is not the terrain that has changed, but that it is he who has aged.Your breath
is short when you are about to reach the end of the journey. Tired, he makes a
stop in a haven of shade, under a tall chestnut tree. As he does not have a
stone to sit on, he leans with both hands on the curvature of his cane, letting
his trunk fall slightly forward. His breathing is paused. When he thinks he has
recovered enough energy to face the last stretch he has left, he crosses paths
with his neighbor Nemesio, who greets him smiling, starting a dialogue with
him:
- - Hello
Don Manuel, it is difficult to climb, with this heat.
- - No, not
Nemesio, what costs are the years, when I was younger, keep in mind that one
day I was also like you. I mean young, it didn't take me even three minutes to
get up from the road, but in those days Nemesio, I on an athletics track,
sometimes ran the kilometer, in the time, that today it took me to do a hundred
meters on this damned road, but from that time I was in better condition, not
only physically, but also, but the path
itself.
- - But Don
Manuel, if this one has just been tidied up, it was never so good, how do you
say that?
- - Well
man, now you're going to tell me how you were and how you are...
- - Okay, okay, he has less than thirty meters to the house, he wants me to accompany him.
- God
forbid, grateful, but, although ailing, there is still a man here, running,
what is called running, is going to be that it is not, besides as one on TV
says, who now I don't remember who he is: "If you have to go (I mean) he
goes, to go for nothing, it's nonsense". I eat snails. Little by little,
but with a firm and sure step. I already ran everything there was to run. You
have to take life calmly, now it's up to you young people, to hit the legs.
- - You are
not wrong Don Manuel, be careful.
- -
Likewise, be careful with the path, which, to be freshly fixed, has every
protruding stone that may give you an upset. With God, boy...
- - Good neighbor. Are you holding on to keep the portal from falling, or are you doing it so you don't fall?
- - No, not
Benita, I knew I was going to open the door and I wanted to give her a reason
to talk.
- - Oh it
seemed to me, this slope is hard and climbing it with this heat more...
- - Lights,
lights... like father, like father...
- - How?
- -
Nothing, nothing, I wondered why your son's name is Nemesio, being you Benita
and your deceased Benito.
- - For a
change, Don Manuel, for a change. Returning to the subject, you are not in the
mood to climb this slope and even less so in this heat.
- - And
give it! Come on, I'm still able to
climb it even with you in my arms...
Does that
mean a proposition?
- - Well,
well, don't jump off the bike, in your time it was one thing, but now there is
no doubt that it is another.
- - Yes,
Benita does, but she never heard it said that whoever had retained, look, to
make four steps, she forces her Dionisio to move the car.
- - That's
only true when I have to carry a lot and is Nemesio and no Dionisio
- It is true. Here they are!!
- - How do
you say?
- - The
keys, which got tangled in my handkerchief and I couldn't find them.
- - Chao
don Manuel, may he always continue like this, with Vigor and
"YOUTH"...
Manuel
entered the house in a bad mood, moving under his breath: these neighbors are
such gossips, they want to take me for old.
He opened
the refrigerator, took a cola drink, put it in a glass with ice cubes, washed
it all down with a good splash of whiskey and in front of a portrait of his
deceased Luisa toas: For our adventures of youth Luisa... I'll visit you
someday.
