HALF A CENTURY OF HISTORY I PROMOTION OF BASIC SERGEANTS

On October 1, 1974, the Basic General Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers of the Spanish Army was created, being located in Talarn, in the Lleida region of Tremp. Which marked a before and after in the training of the non-commissioned officer.

On November 1, 1974, we embarked on the adventure, after the competitive examinations, 899 young people, coming from all corners of the Spanish bullskin, some from the street, others who were in the Civil Guard or doing Military Service in different units. When we arrived at the first port, 40 got off, well one of them J.L.L., rather than getting off was thrown overboard before reaching port, one day after several months enrolled, his captain who would have gotten up on the wrong foot, stared at him and said: you don't measure up, he made him accompany him to the infirmary and indeed, he was two centimeters shorter than stipulated and he was expelled. Another 11 repeated the journey, some voluntarily to change weapons.

But not all of them joined the journey, F.B.C., gave up to apply, after passing the competition, in order to enter the Academy of Officers, failed in the attempt and ended up pursuing a career in medicine dedicating himself professionally to it. He was luckier than that of J.I.C. who, having passed the competitive examination for admission with the II Promotion, fell in combat in the Sahara (Hausa Zone) on August 3, a month before the date of entry.

In this first embarkation, all the student knights were together, regardless of the weapon or corps. At the end of this, each one took the course that had corresponded to him voluntarily or forcibly, those of Infantry to Toledo, those of Artillery to Madrid (the following would go to Segovia), Cavalry to Valladolid, Engineers to Hoyo de Manzanares, Intendancy to Ávila and the specialists according to the specialty to different Teaching Centers.

After this stage of the trip, the third and last cycle of the journey would begin, in which as trainee sergeants, they would take different specialization courses, some informative and others diplomad, among them for the first time, the non-commissioned officers could take the helicopter pilot course, if they met the physical, intellectual and technical conditions required for it. Instructor of Physical Education, Missiles, Parachuting, Mountain, Cars among others were offered to the young sergeants.

Finally, the ships returned to the port of departure at the Talarn Academy, where, on July 15, 1977, the ceremony of delivery of dispatches took place, presided over by SS.MM. the King and Queen of Spain, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía. The students of the III Promotion were trained with them on the esplanade. During the rehearsal phase of this ceremony, it was necessary to regret the loss of a student sergeant, X.X.X., during a guard service, with students of the First Class, in the weapons magazine there was a shot that caused his death on the spot. (We already know that this profession is exciting but it is not without risk).

The sergeants who had just been declared effective had only ten days of rest, to join their destinations, a new and expectant adventure began, with a different dimension. Some immediately entered the Officers' Academy, where they reached different jobs, some reaching that of colonel, others followed the normal cycle, in which they were promoted after eight years to first sergeant by seniority, five more for brigade, after passing a course and in a variable time (in my case six years), to reach the jobs of second lieutenant and some reached the newly created position of senior non-commissioned officer.

Parallel to military life, there were many of us who, trying to improve our intellectual knowledge, embarked on a university adventure, accompanying young people who could be our children, among those who wanted to entertain themselves among books, we must highlight D. G. N, who came to hang up his uniform, (although not his vocation) to serve as a Magistrate Judge. Also others who took their first steps in military medicine and ended up changing to Military Health.

Militarily, some of us had the opportunity to take courses abroad.

The number one of the promotion was the engineer sergeant L.G.R. and in his speech to deliver dispatches to the 710 new sergeants, aware that a new page was inscribed in the military history of Spain, H.M. the King among other things said: You have to be the best soldiers and the mirror in which your subordinates look at themselves

Today, taking a look back through time, we can say that although the voyage had its hard and dark moments, to those of us who are in this world and with the memory of those who preceded us on the way to heaven and who from wherever they are sure will also celebrate, we await the date of July 15, 2027, with the eagerness and pride that comes from belonging to the First Promotion of the Basic General Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers, a date that will mean a whopping half a century of the departure of a new ship that would lead us to the adventure of professional military life.

(Out of due respect, I put acronyms instead of the name, of those students who for one reason or another are cited in this essay of this anniversary)
