Cadete dice el diccionario de la lengua es todo alumno de una Academia Militar, los de Estados Unidos no son excepción. El uniforme de trabajo de los cadetes de Estados Unidos es de color gris, similar a los de otros países, incluso en España. Hasta usaban ese color, los antiguos profesores de las escuelas unitarias de nuestro país.
Los oficiales del Ejército de Estados Unidos pueden formarse dentro de distintos programas que lleven pareja una graduación universitaria.
Los cadetes deben ser fieles al
lema de la Academia: Servicio, honor y patria. Que indica por si solo lo
que se espera de ellos y los valores que se inculcan en sus aulas. La formación de estos es ambivalente pudiendo
salir de ella como oficial de Tierra, Mar, Aire o Infantería de Marina. Uno de
sus ilustres graduados, Dwight D. Eisenhower general que llegó a presidente de
Estados Unidos, pertenecía al ejército de tierra. Pero tenemos a otro caso ilustre,
Michael Collins astronauta que pilotó el Apolo 11, en su viaje a la Luna, pertenecía
al ejército del aire y que se formó en ella.
Pero el ingreso en West Point es
muy selectivo, para poder ingresar, unas plazas son reservadas a los Congresistas,
cada uno puede representar a cinco alumnos, que deben reunir las condiciones
psicofísicas que se exigen para su ingreso. Tienen igualmente derecho a ingreso
directo, los hijos de los que hayan sido condecorados con la medalla de honor,
siempre que reúnan las condiciones establecidas. Sin necesidad del aval de
congresistas. Por último, hay cien plazas reservadas a hijos de militares profesionales.
Que, si reúnen las condiciones y no obtuviesen plaza, pasarían un año en la Academia
de Fort Monmouth en Nueva Jersey y al año siguiente tendrían ingreso directo en
West Point.
Una parte de las instalaciones de
Fort Monmouth es hoy usada por los Estudios Netflix para sus documentales y películas.
Las condiciones de ingreso no
difieren demasiado de las de otros centros militares, tener entre 17 y 23 años,
no pudiendo cumplir los 23 antes del 31 de agosto. Tener reconocida buena
conducta, realizar un examen cultural similar al de ingreso de las
universidades, de las que al menos tres materias estén relacionadas con una
ingeniería. Después de que superan el primer año, los cadetes eligen la
especialidad. La preparación física tiene una gran importancia, los cadetes
tienen que estar en disposición de pasar la pista americana en un tiempo
relativamente corto.
Durante la época estival los
alumnos, de tercero y cuarto curso, deben incorporarse a unidades donde
realizan cursos como paracaidismo, asalto aéreo, combate nocturno, ponen en práctica
valores intrínsecos de la milicia como es el liderazgo.
Durante los años académicos,
según su cualificación, los alumnos reciben distintos empleos, el máximo rango
es coronel-cadete. La primera mujer salida de West Point, que alcanzó el grado
de capitán fue Kristan Barker en 1979.
Durante el periodo académico, los
alumnos solo tienen el domingo, como día libre.
Hace no muchos días escuché a los alumnos de una Academia Militar española una canción cuyo estribillo decía: "La marina tiene un barco, la aviación un avión, los cadetes tienen sable, cuando van en formación".
Los cadetes de West Point, adaptaron a las canciones de marcha, una de los Beatles cuyo estribillo dice así: "And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me. Shine on until tomorrow, let it be"
No obstante, lo expuesto, no
implican que oficiales formados en otros centros, no puedan llegar a los
primeros puestos. Así por ejemplo tenemos el caso de Colin Luther Powell, que
llegó a general jefe del Estado Mayor (cuatro estrellas), mas tarde fue
Secretario de Estado, que se formó como militar en el Cuerpo de Capacitación
para Oficiales de Reserva (ROTC), donde alcanzó el máximo grado como cadete, tras
nacer en Harlem un barrio de Manhattan y obtener el grado de segundo teniente,
toma parte en la guerra de Vietnam donde es herido en dos ocasiones. Aunque coincidió
en el empleo de general con Norman Schwarzkopf (apodado el oso por su
corpulencia física), salido de West Point, no fue inconveniente para que Powell
alcanzase el máximo grado como militar, presidente de la Junta de Estado Mayor
del Ejército de Estados Unidos. Colin Powell murió víctima del COVID 19, el 18
de octubre de 2021. Personalmente
siempre fue al militar que más admiré.
La Reserva Officers´Training Corps,
fue creada por Alden Partridge, fundador de la Norwich University en 1819, hoy existen
un millar de Centros Universitarios de preparación de oficiales militares de
los tres ejércitos y de Marines, donde los alumnos obtienen una beca según
años, por lo que no pagan durante los años de beca, pero en compensación,
firman un compromiso equivalente a los años de la beca, para servir en las
Fuerzas Armadas. Por ejemplo, si la beca fue de 4 años, debe al graduarse como
teniente, pasar otros cuatro, si lo hace a tiempo total o bien ocho si lo hace
a tiempo parcial, no obstante, en caso necesario, podría ser movilizado si las
circunstancias así lo requiriesen.

U.S. Army officers can be trained in a variety of programs that go along with a college degree.
Of all the military training centers, the most
prestigious and famous is undoubtedly that of West Point, created in 1802.
Located on a 65-square-kilometer site on the banks of the Hudson River, it is
one of the largest Military Centers in the world. It has, among other things, a
shooting range for heavy field artillery weapons and a ski training track. With
the added advantage that it is less than a hundred kilometers from New York
City.
Cadets must be faithful to the motto of the
Academy: Service, honor and homeland. That indicates by itself what is
expected of them and the values that are instilled in their classrooms. Their training is ambivalent and they can
