PONTEVEDRA, PUNTO DE REFERENCIA EN EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO//PONTEVEDRA, A LANDMARK ON THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

 

Que Pontevedra es un lugar de referencia en la variante portuguesa del Camino de
Santiago, está fuera de toda duda, para ejemplo, basta decir que, desde el uno de enero de este año por el punto de acogida del peregrino, de la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor, han pasado personas de 64 países diferentes, pertenecientes a los cinco continentes.

Los viajeros quedan sorprendidos por el carácter de la gente, por el cariño que les muestra y por las altruistas informaciones que se le ofrecen, para una mejor forma de llevar su peregrinación, así como reencuentro consigo mismo en el terreno espiritual, pues no son pocos los que vienen con dos mochilas, una de ellas la simbólica de sus preocupaciones personales.

Así mismo, los que hacen la ruta de Santiago a Fátima se encuentran con la agradable sorpresa de que pueden visitar la Casa-Santuario de la Virgen, donde el Niño Jesús y la Virgen María se aparecieron a Sor Lúcia de los Santos (la mayor de los pastorcillos de Fátima), el 10 de enero de 1925, cuando Lúcia estaba como postulante, para hacer su ingreso en la Orden de las Hermanas Doroteas, establecidas en esta ciudad desde 1918 y donde le pidió, como le había dicho en la aparición del 13 de julio de 1917, divulgar la Comunión Reparadora de los Cinco Primeros Sábados de Mes.

Por este lugar santo han pasado desde primeros de año más de 20.000 personas. El Vaticano concedió al Santuario ser año jubilar desde el 10 de diciembre del presente al 10 de diciembre de 2026. Pero como podemos ver por las cifras expuestas, ya son muchos los que se quisieron anticipar a ese jubileo extraordinario. Quizás con la mirada puesta en el 2027 “Año Santo Compostelano”.

Muchos son los puntos de interés que la ciudad ofrece al visitante espiritual o lúdico, desde el museo provincial a templos como los citados Santuario Apariciones y la  Basílica de Santa María, el Convento de San Francisco o la Capilla de la Virgen Peregrina, que colocada en la plaza de su nombre, justo en el paso del “Camino” con su forma de vieira en cuy
o interior se encuentra una pila natural de un bivalvo gigante del Pacífico para el  agua bendita, donada por el Almirante pontevedrés Casto Méndez Núñez (1824-1869), en agradecimiento por la victoria en la batalla de Mindanao (Filipinas) en 1861. También la colección de 15 trajes (dos de ellos confeccionadas con los capotes de los toreros Julián Marín y Ángel Teruel) que van alternándose a lo largo del año. O el carrillón del reloj, que marca el mediodía con la melodía del rezo del Ángelus.

A lo largo del año, Pontevedra tiene distintos festejos singulares, como es el Entierro del Loro del Ravachol en carnavales, las Fiestas Patronales en honor a la Virgen Peregrina el verano o la Feria Franca Medieval a principios de septiembre.

En el ámbito deportivo sin duda la prueba más internacional es la de Triathlon (nadar, correr en bicicleta y correr a pie), habiendo albergado el Campeonato del Mundo Multisport, la Final de las Series Mundiales, el Campeonato del Mundo, de Europa, de España, distintas ediciones de Copas de Mundo y de Europa, estando ya en el calendario la próxima cita “La Final de las Series Mundiales del 23 al 27 de septiembre del año 2026.

of the shepherd children of Fatima), on January 10, 1925, when Lucia was a postulant.  to enter the Order of the Dorothean Sisters, established in this city since 1918 and where he asked her, as he had told her in the apparition of July 13, 1917, to spread the Reparative Communion of the Five First Saturdays of the Month.

name, right at the passage of the "Camino" with its scallop shape inside which there is a natural basin of a giant bivalve of the Pacific for holy water, donated by the Pontevedra Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez (1824-1869), in gratitude for the victory in the battle of Mindanao (Philippines) in 1861. Also, the collection of 15 costumes (two of them made with the capes of the bullfighters Julián Marín and Ángel Teruel) that alternate throughout the year. Or the carillon of the clock, which marks noon with the melody of the Angelus prayer.

Throughout the year, Pontevedra has different unique celebrations, such as the Burial of the Parrot of Ravachol in carnivals, the Patron Saint Festivities in honour of the Pilgrim Virgin in the summer or the Medieval Free Fair at the beginning of September.

In the sports field, undoubtedly the most international event is the Triathlon (swimming, cycling and running), having hosted the Multisport World Championship, the World Series Final, the World Championship, the European Championship, the Spanish World Cup, different editions of World Cups and Europe, with the next event "The World Series Final from September 23 to 27, 2026 already on the calendar.
