THE
JOURNEY IN SHANGHAI
On Friday, December 20, 1974, all the students
of the AGBS, the Lleida Academy in the Pyrenees, located in Talarn, began their
long-awaited Christmas leave. Since joining on November 1, they had not enjoyed
any, since, on weekends, you could go out, but you had to sleep at the Academy,
so everyone wanted to get home and hug their loved ones. Except for a
privileged few who had their own vehicle, most of us would take the commuter
train around nine o'clock in Tremp, to get to Lleida, where we all had to change,
to go to different points of the "bull's skin".
Those of
us from Galicia got on the popularly known as the "Shanghai train",
because of its slowness, not only because of the speed it reached, but also
because it stopped at almost all stations, whether or not they had to drop off
or pick up passengers, because this train was also a mail train. A train with
many first and second class carriages, pulled by two diesel engines.
Everything took place in a bustling
tranquility, sharing adventures and experiences of the first cycle and meeting
people who traveled, some to spend their Christmas holidays, others were
students who were doing their degrees in Barcelona. Suddenly in the middle of
nowhere and at the heights of the town of Monzón, in the province of Huesca,
the train slowed down until it stopped completely, no one sensed what could
happen, but the advantage of those old trains was that you could lower the
windows and look, something we all did, we immediately noticed the smoke, but at first we thought it was the engine's
own, until someone shouted, the train is burning, that's when they gave us the
order to get off the train.
The crew got off and unhooked the first two
wagons, which were precisely those of the mail, which for reasons that no one
explained were the ones that were burning, the operation was carried out, the
machine dragged both a prudent distance, then they unhooked the machines and
they moved away with caution. Most fire extinguishers did not work and those
that did were not effective against the flames.
As we
had a station nearby that we had left in our path, a machine made us go back
until we reached it, there began a long wait, the hours of delay began to
accumulate, the tracks due to the heat had dilated more than twenty
centimeters. We had to take a detour, to
be able to get to Zaragoza, that's where our painful journey began, because the
train, going outside its normal schedule, had to leave crossing passage for
those who came in the opposite direction, whether they were passengers or
goods, the families waiting at the stations, the arrival of the train, they did
not receive information and those of us who were on the train, They did not let us call on the phone, they
only allowed us to be on the platform when the stop was long. There were
desperate families, such as a married couple, who attended the funeral of a
father, the desperation was great. There came a time when patience ran out and
that happened in Burgos, we had been on the train for two hours and they said
that we could not get off, because they were going to give us a bag of cold
food, but the delivery was slow and people went down to the platform and a
tumult formed in front of the stationmaster's office. The police of this
positioned themselves in front of the door, but tempers were very heated, the
chief with a megaphone addressed the people and said that they had obtained
permission, so that, from that moment until we reached the destination, we
would have priority of way, finally almost at eight o'clock in the morning on
Sunday we arrived at the destination. In Orense, one part of the train was
diverted to Coruña and the other to Vigo, the accumulated delay from Lleida was
27 hours, not counting the time from Tremp to Lleida.
On Sunday morning, we arrived in Pontevedra and
when we were reunited with our family, the hardships of the trip disappeared by
magic, also the fatigue, the blood of youth was renewed and I endured that and
much more.
