Los rayos del sol caían plomizos sobre la pétrea plaza del Vaticano, a diez minutos para las cinco de la tarde, el vehículo papal estaba estacionado en la zona donde subiría Juan Pablo II

Ni William Casey director de la CIA, que, tras entrevistarse con Karoll Wojtyla, había conseguido en 1981, abrir una oficina en el propio Vaticano, ni todos los servicios de seguridad destacados en San Pedro, podrían predecir lo que en pocos minutos después iba a ocurrir en ese cálido 13 de mayo de ese mismo año.

Con puntualidad inglesa a las 17:00 horas, el “campagnola” comenzaba su recorrido, por las calles delimitadas saludando al público que aplaudía con entusiasmo el paso del papamóvil. El papa, pese a los cómodos asientos del vehículo forrados con cuero blanco a juego con su sotana, iba de pie con una mano sujeta en una barra y con la otra saludando a la multitud.

 A velocidad inferior a cinco kilómetros por hora para permitir que policías de uniforme y paisano fuesen escoltando a paso apurado, cubriendo las partes delantera y trasera de este.

Quince minutos después, el papa mandó parar el vehículo, tomo una niña en brazos ofrecida por su madre y la beso inclinándose para poder entregarla de nuevo. Solo tres minutos después, suena un disparo el papa se sujeto con ambas manos en la barra, el impacto le había dado en el estómago, aunque se desvanecía instintivamente echó una mano, para taponar la herida por donde salía sangre, que comenzaba a tintar de rojo su sotana, el segundo disparo le alcanzó la mano derecha y un tercero el brazo del mismo lado. En el rebote de las balas,  la norteamericana Ann Odre y la jamaicana Rose Hill también resaltarían heridas.

El terrorista amenazando a la gente con su pistola Browning HP de 9 mm parabellum con número de serie 76C23953, echó a correr, en un momento dado la tira lejos, confiando confundirse con el público, fue el momento en que uno de los policías se lanzó contra él y consiguió reducirlo y detenerlo.

El papa fue trasladado en el papamóvil hasta la ambulancia que, con escolta policial, lo trasladó al hospital Gemelli por ser el más cercano a la Plaza de San Pedro, al que dieron aviso de la llegada papal y realizando el trayecto en menos de diez minutos, por eso quizás salvo su vida.

La gente pasó del júbilo al llanto y del griterío al silencio, espontáneamente comenzaron el rezo del rosario, por la salvación del papa, siendo este uno más de los diez intentos por acabar con la vida del papa, que llevaron al cardenal Luigi Poggi a investigar por el mundo, quien tenía tanto interés en querer matarlo.
