EL SINGULAR REGIMIENTO "SAN MARCOS" DE ITALIA//THE UNIQUE SAN MARCO REGIMENT (ITALY)
REGIMIENTO SAN MARCOS (ITALIA)
lema: “Por Mar y Tierra”

THE UNIQUE SAN MARCO REGIMENT (ITALY)
The basis of this work stems from a series of
articles for the military magazine KFOR CHRONICLE, in which I was proud to
participate, dedicated to the missions of different NATO armies, which were on
the scene of Kosovo, taking part in the KFOR mission.
As among the different units were members of
the charismatic San Marco Regiment, we did not miss the opportunity to learn a
part of its legendary history, thanks above all to the directives of Major
Stefan Ratzemger and the snapshots taken by Armend Aquifi (both from the KFOR
PIO office).
The "San Marco" Regiment is one of
the oldest in Italy, being founded in 1713, framed within
In 1915 it was increased to the category of
Brigade, composed of two Regiments, one of Infantry and the other of Artillery,
continuing to be part of the Navy. Taking part in different
confrontations against the Turks.
Two years later they faced the Austro-Hungarian
army in Caporetto (Slovenia), but they were forced to retreat and cross the
Taglimento River, once settled on the banks of the Piare River, they became
strong, cutting off the advance of the enemy troops and saving Venice from
falling into their hands. In recognition of this feat and returning to the
status of Regiment, it is given the name of "San Marcos" Regiment
since this evangelist is the Patron Saint of the famous and canalized Venice.
After taking part in different acts of arms, in
Europe and Africa, after a time that he remained practically in the staff
cadre, he was reactivated in 1964 as a Regiment, establishing himself at the
Brindisi Base on the Italian Adriatic coast. With personnel chosen and
meticulously
selected from different naval units, they had to meet special
physical and intellectual conditions in different fields, being trained for
shooting with different individual weapons.
The coat of arms is a lion, which is the symbol
of the evangelist San Marcos, which gives its name to the Regiment and its
motto: "By Sea and Land"
The military training is similar to that of the
"Marines" of the United States, combining their operational exercises
of use both at Sea and on Land. Using its own logistics for its supply, which
gives it great flexibility both in employment and mobility, constituting the
most versatile light unit of the Italian army.
Lt. Col. F. Maltinti, who was at that time in
command of the unit deployed in Kosovo, stated that its components frequently
go on mission, even sometimes, some components overlap them, with only six
months of rest. This makes it currently one of the NATO units with the greatest
international projection. Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Albania,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, East Timor, Eritrea, Arabian Sea, Iraq and Kosovo are the
most frequented theatres of operations by its components.
The former Commander-in-Chief of KFOR, retired
Lieutenant General of the French Army Yves de Kermabon, as Head of EULEX,
accompanied the Italian General Enrico Pino, Chief of Operations of the
Headquarters in Pristhina, to witness at Camp Slim Line (Kosovo), a Crowd
Control exercise, carried out by the soldiers of the Regiment.
I had the opportunity to discuss this exercise
with Major T. Di Niso, a native of Florence, with whom I had a good friendship.
The conclusion that the Opposition Force against the riot police did not differ
too much from the exercise carried out from June 18 to 28, 2008, in which I
participated as a member of the OPFOR, with the BRILAT at the CENAD of San
Gregorio in the "Spanish Falcon" in which a Unit of the Dutch Army
also took part.
