IS THIRTEEN AN
EVIL NUMBER?
The 13 formed by
the first two odd digits of the table, arouses in many people a certain
antipathy as an omen of bad luck, to the point that some would like to skip it
when they have to quote it.
The great
Spanish driver Ángel Nieto, winner of 13 world titles, referred to the last one
as the twelve-plus-one title.
The "Niños
Héroes de Chapultepec" had their feat on September 13, 1847, some young
cadets between the ages of 13 (coincidentally) and 18 years old, did not
hesitate to take up arms to help the adult soldiers in distress, against the
American army. Although they lost the battle and some of them even their lives,
they were immortalized in the feat of a thirteenth day.
Perhaps that is
why in the Tarot cards, the thirteen represents death. However, death is still
a step, towards something that can mean a better world, a time and a space that
signals a new dimension.
It is true that,
in the Holy Scriptures, the thirteenth chapter of the Apocalypse is associated
with the end of the world. But biblically the thirteen marks good things, so at
the Last Supper,
there were thirteen diners, the twelve apostles and Jesus, Judas
was present at the supper, only abandoning it at the end, to forge the death of
the Lord.
One of the
world's most popularly venerated saints, St. Anthony of Padua, died on June 13,
1231, the day on which his feast day is kept.
In the life of
the shepherd children Sister Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and
Francisca, the thirteen was always present, as something essential in the
apparitions of Fatima, especially in that of Lucia. Of all the most relevant were:
The Virgin
appeared to them six times in 1917 when they were children, all thirteen times
except the fourth, because on that day, the Mayor of Ourém prevented them from
going to meet them. On June 13, 1929, she appeared in Tui to Sister Lucy, to
ask for the Consecration of Russia and the Mystery of the Holy Trinity was
revealed to her, a secret that is still maintained today. On May 13, 1948, she
took the habit in the Carmel of Coimbra. On May 13, 1961, Paul VI awarded the
Golden Rose to the Image of Fatima. On May 13, 1967, Paul VI met with Sister
Lucia. On May 13, 1982 and May 13, 1991, John Paul II met with her. On May 13,
1989, John Paul II declared Francis venerable and declared him patron saint of
Portuguese acolytes. On May 13, 2000, the same pope beatified Francisco and
Jacinta. On May 13, 2017, the two brothers were canonized by Pope Francis. On
October 13, 1996, Cardinal Ratzenger, later Benedict XVI, met with Sister
Lucia.
It is also in
thirteen when Sister Lucia leaves this world, precisely on February 13, 2005,
when she was just over a month away from her 98th birthday.
